Dismayed: disheartened; deprived of courage. Consternation and distress, typically that is caused by something unexpected.
Hebrew: hatat [khaw-thath’]: dismayed[27], afraid[6], break in pieces[6], broken[3], break down[2], abolished[2], affrighted[1], amazed[1], chapt [1], confound[1], discouraged[1], go down[1], etc. properly to prostrate; hence to break down, either (literal) by violence, or (figurative) by confusion and fear :- abolish, affright, be (make) afraid, amaze, beat down, discourage, (cause to) dismay, go down, scare, terrify. Strong’s Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. Usage Notes: “to be dismayed, shattered, broken, terrified.” Used primarily in the Hebrew Old Testament. The word is used approximately 50 times in the Hebrew Old Testament and occurs for the first time in Deut. 1:21 as Moses challenged Israel: “Do not fear or be dismayed” (rsv, neb, “afraid”; kjv, jb, “discouraged”). As here, ḥātat
is often used in parallelism with the Hebrew term for “fear” (cf. Deut. 31:8; Josh. 8:1; 1 Sam. 17:11). Similarly, ḥātat
is frequently used in parallelism with “to be ashamed” (Isa. 20:5; Jer. 8:9). The meaning “to be shattered or break in pieces” is usually employed in a figurative sense, as with reference to the nations coming under God’s judgment (Isa. 7:8; Isa. 30:31). God is attempting to get across to us that we must not let the enemy of our soul and bodies get between us and our Savior, Baptizer, Redeemer, Friend, and Healer. We must always stay in His Word and declare to Heaven and Earth, ‘I Believe, yes I Believe!!!” There is no other way to be encourage or full of faith than to read and study and meditate the Word of God and as you do and are consistent and committed to it, it will change you from the inside out and if you are born again and filled with the Spirit, all that He is, you will become. Romans 10:17 (NLT2) So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ. 2 Timothy 2:15 (AMP) Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth. Joshua 1:8 (NLT2) Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.
Luke 8:12 (BBE) Those by the side of the road are those who have been given ‘hearing’; then the Evil One comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not have faith and get salvation. Luke 8:13 (BBE) And those on the rock are those who with joy give hearing to the word; but having no root, they have faith for a time, and when the test comes, they give up.
The concept of ‘hearing’ is embedded in the idea that hearing is a present participle and represents the truth of ‘keep on hearing and hearing and hearing’. Don’t do as the Luke 8:12 folks and hear and receive and then lose what was sown in the heart. If you feel you can make it without this consistency, you are fooling yourself and at some point, satan will enter in and get a foothold, even to the point you give up. This is dangerous and one must learn to protect oneself from the onslaught of the enemy and keep that full armor on and ready for battle at all times. Remember, one must take the sword of the Spirit and do battle for without the working of the Holy Spirit daily, there will be no battle won and no victory and the war will belong to the devil. We are redeemed and justified, and we need to nourish and enrich our minds to this great salvation that was granted at such a great price.
